dunford will take on over the reins from john allen. he took over from general petraeus. while general allen is still running the war over there, he too is caught up in the petraeus affair scandal. his confirmation hearings for his next big job, nato supreme commander, those hearings are on hold while the matter of general allen's only personal relationship with one of the women involved can be sorted out. general allen is in washington for his own now postponed confirmation hearings for his next job and for his own now canceled role in the confirmation hearings for his successor to lead the afghanistan war. in washington he is denying any suggestion that he had an inappropriate relationship with anyone, and the defense department and white house are standing by him while the investigation continues. and while he smits his plans to the president now for which americans are going to remain in afghanistan after the official u.s. troop withdrawal from that war, which is not this year, and it's not next year. that doesn't happen anytime during the following yearle until the very end of the

that another major military figure, general john allen, the commander of u.s. and nato troops in afghanistan and petraeus' successor in that position, has been having an e-mail relationship with jill kelley. the fbi uncovers somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of documents that contain, quote, potentially inappropriate communication between allen and kelley, one senior u.s. defense official tells the "washington post." "the post" also reports that allen received at least one e-mail that talks about kelley from an unidentified account that was traced to none other than paula broadwell. well, there you have it. you're investigating this. i tried to explain this, and i'm trying not to be light-hearted, but there's such an aspect to this story rather well below the importance of the positions these men hold. one of them being, of course, our commander in afghanistan. the other one until recently head of the cia. this aspect to it, it's just -- well, i don't know what to say. i'm not used to covering these kinds of stories and wouldn't be if these weren't the people involved. your thoughts

're joined by senior correspondent john miller, who's been talking to his sources on the story. john, why would the f.b.i. be investigating the communications of the director of the c.i.a.? >> normally that wouldn't be the case. ikat is much more likely here is nica the communications of someone else-- possibly in a foreign country that are now touching the c.i.a. director's communications-- would rise to their attention. and then what happens here is they're looking at these messages and they seem to be cryptic in nature, which raises the question, all right, well, who is this person, what are these communications about, why are they cryptic? that's how the snowball rolls .own the hill. e> >> pelley: so in the normal seurse of business the f.b.i. and counterintelligence is looking for penetration of the c.i.a. and its communications systems? >> exactly. o have it on this level is not elly extraordinarily rare it's unprecedented. >> pelley: i wonder if your sources are telling you about anything about whether any classified information or national secrets were divulged in any of this? >>

real clear politics, real clear markets, good to see you, john. >> good morning. >> dave: compromise, not a word we hear often in washington. if there is compromise to avoid this fiscal cliff, where does it come? john boehner indicated, revenue is possible, but we're not raising tax rates. where is there compromise? >> i think where there's going to be a compromise on taxes, this be would be a good thing on the economy, might exchange lower tax rates in return for a reduction in all the loopholes that as it is distort economic activity. so if boehner were able to achieve that kind of compromise, that's one that the republicans could be pleased with. the bush tax cuts are gone, they're expiring, and the president said that 250,000 below, he wants that extended, but for those making more than 250, will the bush tax cuts come to an end? >> i don't think so. i think actually the they won't come to an end because the democrats don't want major reduction in spending, if you hit the cliff, the spending would go down and politicians love to spend money. an extension of the bush tax cuts, les
